Neuropathology of epilepsy

چکیده
The effects of seizures on the brain are complex and have to be disentangled from the effects of any primary, underlying neurological disease process that has led to increased seizure susceptibility. Although there is evidence to support detrimental effects of seizures on brain histology, this is not inevitable1,2. Prolonged seizures may result in neuronal death by apoptotic (programmed or ‘active’) or necrotic pathways, as well as gliosis and microglial activation. Furthermore, injurious effects of seizures should be evaluated not only by histological changes, but at the subcellular, synaptic and molecular level. Neuropathological alterations may be adaptive and reversible while others are permanent.

Neuropathology of Temporal Lobe Epilepsy
Pathologic findings in surgical resections from patients with temporal lobe epilepsy include a wide range of diagnostic possibilities that can be categorized into different groups on the basis of etiology. This paper outlines the various pathologic entities described in temporal lobe epilepsy, including some newly recognized epilepsy-associated tumors, and briefly touch on the recent classifica...

We report an autopsy case of hemiconvulsion-hemiplegia-epilepsy (HHE) syndrome in a 79-year-old man. HHE syndrome usually occurs in children younger than 4 years of age. Although most HHE syndrome patients live into adult life, only a few cases of the syndrome have been reported in the elderly. In our case, cerebral hemiatrophy, left mesial temporal sclerosis and crossed cerebellar atrophy were...
متن کاملCognitive function of idiopathic childhood epilepsy
Most children with epilepsy are of normal intelligence. However, a significant subset will have temporary or permanent cognitive impairment. Factors that affect cognitive function are myriad and include the underlying neuropathology of the epilepsy, seizures, epileptiform discharges, psychosocial problems, age at seizure onset, duration of epilepsy, and side effects associated with antiepilepti...
متن کاملمقایسه برخی فرایندهای شناختی در بیماران صرعی قبل و پس از درمان
Epileptic patients are more prone to cognitive problems. Epilepsy per se may lead to cognitive impairments or it may intensify the already available impairments. A variety of factors have been known to affect these impairments, including: neuropathology, seizure type and age at seizure onset, psychosocial problems and side effects of drug therapy. Treatment of epilepsy may improve cognitive dis...
متن کاملHippocampal neuropathology of domoic acid-induced epilepsy in California sea lions (Zalophus californianus).
California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) are abundant human-sized carnivores with large gyrencephalic brains. They develop epilepsy after experiencing status epilepticus when naturally exposed to domoic acid. We tested whether sea lions previously exposed to DA (chronic DA sea lions) display hippocampal neuropathology similar to that of human patients with temporal lobe epilepsy. Hippocamp...

He [Myshkin] remembered that during his epileptic fits, or rather immediately preceding them, he had always experienced a moment or two when his whole heart and mind, and body seemed to wake up to vigour and light; when he became filled with joy and hope, and all his anxieties seemed to be swept away for ever; these moments were but presentiments, as it were, of the one final second (it was nev...
